Association of Landscape Contractors of Ireland Appeal

People in rural Africa walk on average 30 miles per day. Going to school, work, church or to visit friends means walking on rough roads for several hours. For many their lives are limited to a 15 mile radius of their village. Because regular public transport does not exist many can only seek work close to home.

I remember the great joy and sense of freedom I felt when I got my first bike. It meant I could visit friends and explore places not feasible in a days walk. It meant as a teenager I could take a biking holidays around Ireland and abroad. Yes it opened my world beyond the street I lived on. Ask yourself have you a forgotten or abandoned bike in your tool shed or perhaps a vague recollection of a bike lost among the bushes or a ditch at the end of your garden. If so, the members of the Association of Landscape Contractors of Ireland would love to hear from you. Our mission for 2010 is to rescue a full container of bikes from gardens all over Ireland to send them to Africa. Our charity partners and ALCI are committed to shipping bikes in any condition to rural African communities. Every bike part will be used by township communities to re-cycle and restore bicycles. The work will provide employment and funds to distribute affordable bikes for everyone in need, young or old.

TO DONATE YOUR BYCYCLE FOR COLLECTION PLEASE SEARCH ON THE WEBSITE FOR YOUR LOCAL ALCI MEMBER WHO WILL CALL AND COLLECT IT AT A CONVENIENT SET TIME FOR YOU.

PRESS RELEASE:

€30 million investment by Kilsaran Group results in 120 new jobs

MD of Kilsaran Lifestyle Tom Tevlin with Minister for Transport , Mr Noel Dempsey TD at the announcement which took place at the new Kilsaran Lifestyle Display Centre & Showroom in Dunboyne, Co. Meath on Friday 25th September.

Kilsaran Group, Ireland’s largest independent producer of concrete products, announced details of a €30 million investment and has created and retained 120 jobs. It is envisaged that an additional 50 more jobs will be created over the next 12 – 18 months. The 14 acre site encompassing the new world-class paving manufacturing and processing plant, showroom and landscaped display gardens was launched by Minister for Transport , Mr Noel Dempsey TD at an event held by Kilsaran in Dunboyne, Co. Meath on Friday (25th September).

As part of its overall investment, the Kilsaran Group has re-branded its paving division as Kilsaran Lifestyle and has created a state-of-the-art display centre. The investment is a result of the changing dynamic of the traditional construction business which is down by as much as 50%.

The company, founded by the late Patrick McKeown in 1964, proceeded with the investment programme despite the worsening economic climate and downturn in the construction industry on the basis that consumers would invest in improving and renovating their gardens as opposed to moving. Equally, in a declining market, construction professionals would seek new, innovative and superior quality products at the right price for their clients.

Speaking at the launch on Friday, Minister Dempsey said: “The opening of this new facility embodies the flexibility, vision, innovation and determination that is required by business at this critical time in our economic cycle. Kilsaran Group, in embracing new technologies, is pushing the boundaries in landscape innovation, providing additional employment and helping to generate consumer confidence. The unveiling of this impressive facility is a proud day for everyone involved in bringing the development to fruition, and represents a major boost for the local economy and further afield.”

Kilsaran Lifestyle believes that while the changing construction industry has caused a large contraction in certain areas it also creates opportunities. David McKeown, Kilsaran Group Company Director said that: “This is a very exciting time for the Kilsaran Group and this large-scale investment represents an exciting new chapter and a fresh approach. We extensively researched other concrete paving manufacturing and display facilities across the globe and feel our facilities surpass anything we have seen.  This new facility will allow Kilsaran to significantly expand its product range and increase the choice of product finishes, while a new R&D laboratory will ensure that the product range continues to grow and maintain its leading position in the Irish market.”

The Kilsaran Group is a wholly-owned Irish company and is a member of the Guaranteed Irish family of brands. Today, the Group currently employs more than 450 at 18 locations around the country and has been a supplier to major projects such as the National Convention Centre, Dublin Airport, the M50, Liffey Valley Shopping Centre, LUAS, Adamstown and a variety of housing developments, hotels, service stations and seaports nationwide.

The Kilsaran Lifestyle Display Centre & Showroom is situated on the N3 only ten minutes from the M50 exit heading towards Navan. For details log onto www.kilsaranlifestyle.ie

GLDA’s 14th International Design Seminar 2010
What’s the Big Idea? From Inspiration to Fruition
National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin Dublin 9/Saturday 6th February 2010

It has been said that successful garden design is one of the world’s most wide-ranging and challenging careers, combining, as it does, the expressive spirit of an artist with an in-depth knowledge of such subjects as architecture, engineering and horticulture.

So how do the world’s most talented designers reconcile their creative hearts with their deductive minds? How does the ‘Big Idea’ lead to the creation of a working design and on to the reality of a dynamic, evolving landscape? To shed light on this elusive process the Garden and Landscape Designers Association has drawn together a diverse line up of internationally renowned designers for its 14th annual seminar. Taking place on Saturday, February 6th 2010, this day-long event promises to be one of inspiration and creative insight.

Vietnamese born designer and artist Andy Cao and French landscape designer Xavier Perrot draw on their diverse cultural backgrounds to create hybrid environments blending art and landscape, while inviting the viewer into a contemplative world of texture, colour and sensuality. This world-renowned partnership will present radical perspectives that encapsulate their philosophies and diverse portfolio of work, which notably includes the winning design for the inspirational Guangming Central Park, Shenzhen, China. www.caoperrotstudio.com

As one of Ireland’s most renowned garden designers, Mary Reynolds has the distinction of being an Irish designer to win a gold medal at Chelsea. She has completed a wide range of commissions, both nationally and internationally, and has featured on garden-related programmes for the BBC and RTE. With a history of creating healing, spiritual spaces iinterwoven with mythical allegory, while addressing complex ecological issues, she is sure to be both entertaining and informative. www.maryreynoldsdesigns.com

Christian Dobrick is an urban designer and landscape architect with Dutch design practice West 8, which in recent years has created some of the world’s most dynamic and high profile public design projects, including the Toronto central waterfront and the Santa Giulia Park in Milan. At the forefront of innovative landscape architecture and urban design, Christian will no doubt give us an insight into how such inspiring projects are conceived, designed and delivered. www.west8.nl

If you have ever wondered how the world’s most highly regarded designers translate their big ideas from flashes of creativity to tangible landscapes, then mark the 6th of February as the day you might just get your answer.
